Wiltshire - Church Leat, Downton

Three bedroom cottage at £349,500 with garage

Amongst acres of water meadow on the banks of the River Avon, Church Leat has 23 two and three-bedroom cottages and eight apartments next to a millstream, on a site occupied for centuries by the village tannery close to the heart of Downton. All the cottages have either a conservatory or balcony and some have both. The spacious apartments have dining halls and three have been built over the Barford Carrier. All the cottages and apartments at Church Leat are individually designed in the local vernacular.

Downton has a wide range of local shops and services, including a sports centre, with indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a county standard bowling green. The Hampworth Golf and Country Club is four miles away and there are several public courses in the immediate area. The New Forest boundary lies five miles to the south of Downton and unrivalled countryside stretches southwards, eighteen miles to the coast, where opportunities exist to sail and enjoy the sea.

St Laurence‘s Church dates from around 1150, but an earlier Saxon church, consecrated by St Birinus in 638 AD, once stood on this site. The Grade I listed Church and adjoining Manor House now provide a dramatic backdrop for the cottages and apartments at Church Leat and some enviable views. Tanning has long been a tradition in Downton and records show a tanner operating in the village as early as 1215. A significant local industry in the 18th and 19th centuries the new ‘Tannery‘ was built in 1905 and has since been converted to apartments.

Buckinghamshire - Framers Court, Lane End

Two bedroom apartment - £345,000 Buckinghamshire

Framers Court is just off the High Street tucked into a sheltered hollow and has been carefully designed to fit into its rural setting on the edge of the village. It consists of two secluded courtyards of cottages, maisonettes and apartments and the mellow red bricks and flint contrast with the grey brick panels echoing the most striking feature of the old village houses. The main approach is via Ellis Way but the private pedestrian route through Framers Alley leads directly to the centre of the village and the shops.

Lane End is a very attractive village high in the Chilterns close to Marlow, High Wycombe and Henley. There are excellent village shops, a bank, post office, hairdresser, doctor‘s surgery and a fine selection of pubs. The name ‘Framers Court‘ commemorates a small Victorian chair makers‘ workshop that stood on part of the land. For two centuries Lane End was associated with the chair making industry in High Wycombe and at one time chairs were produced at the rate of 4700 per day.

Lane End lies on the B482 just to the south of the M40 motorway as it passes between High Wycombe and Marlow. It is four miles from Marlow, six miles from the centre of High Wycombe and eight miles from Henley. The M4 motorway at Maidenhead is nine miles away. London is 45 miles and Oxford 24 miles. There is a good regular train service to London (Marylebone) from High Wycombe and a less frequent service from Marlow to Paddington.
