Wiltshire - Church Leat, Downton

Amongst acres of water meadow on the banks of the River Avon, Church Leat has 23 two and three-bedroom cottages and eight apartments next to a millstream, on a site occupied for centuries by the village tannery close to the heart of Downton. Tanning has long been a tradition in Downton and records show a tanner operating in the village as early as 1215. A significant local industry in the 18th and 19th centuries the new ‘Tannery‘ was built in 1905 and has since been converted to apartments.

Lane End lies on the B482 just to the south of the M40 motorway as it passes between High Wycombe and Marlow. It is four miles from Marlow, six miles from the centre of High Wycombe and eight miles from Henley. The M4 motorway at Maidenhead is nine miles away. London is 45 miles and Oxford 24 miles. There is a good regular train service to London (Marylebone) from High Wycombe and a less frequent service from Marlow to Paddington.
